What is S3 Object Storage?

S3 Object Storage is a technology for the reliable storage of large amounts of data. The storage is a dimensionless container into which any type of file (called an object) can be sent for storage.

The technology was introduced in 2006. It was developed by AWS as an API and now this solution is the most popular and demanded for cloud storage. The solution allows access to any storage object via URL links with a unique object identifier over HTTP or HTTPS. Objects can be interacted with via web or API.

Each object in S3 storage includes:

  • A unique identifier. A string that allows the object to be recognised and accessed directly in the S3 repository.
  • Metadata. Various meaningful attributes about the object. These include name, file size, file type, URL.
  • Content.

The S3 protocol provides access rights management and lifecycle control.

S3 object storage can be used to create backups, store large amounts of information, create multimedia libraries of audio, video and images, and for long-term archival storage.

Is there a limit to the amount of data I can store?
No. You can store any number of files and an unlimited amount of data.
What can I do with repository objects?
Data in the repository can be uploaded, copied, moved, downloaded and deleted. You can sort data into folders.
What is the difference between Object Storage and Google Drive, Dropbox and others?
Google Drive, Dropbox and other similar storage solutions are suitable for storing small amounts of not too sensitive data. S3 Object Storage, on the other hand, can store the data of large organizations and provides access control and a high level of information security. This solution is also easily scalable to meet business needs.
Is the data protected?

Can I connect an Object Storage container as a network drive?

How is data backed up in Object Storage?
