What is S3 Object Storage?

A simple, scalable way to store massive amounts of data securely. Unlike traditional storage, S3 uses flat, unlimited "buckets" where files (called objects) are stored with unique identifiers.

Introduced by AWS in 2006, S3 has become the global standard for cloud storage. Access files instantly via HTTP/HTTPS links or manage them through a web interface or API.

Every object in S3 storage includes:

  • A unique identifier – Directly access any file in storage.
  • Metadata –  File name, size, type, and other details.
  • Content –  Your documents, images, backups, etc.

You control access permissions and can set automated lifecycle rules (e.g., archive old files).

S3 Object Storage can be used for data backup, storing large amounts of information, creating multimedia libraries of audio, video and images, and long-term archival storage.

Benefits of S3 Object Storage

  • No extra load on your system. Storage runs independently, saving resources.
  • Free inbound traffic. Upload as much data as you need — no extra fees.
  • Seamless integration. Works with your existing business tools.
  • Unlimited scalability. Store any amount of data. The storage automatically scales as your data grows.
  • 24/7 availability. We ensure uninterrupted service availability so that you can access your data at any time.

FAQ

Is there a limit to the amount of data I can store?
No. You can store an unlimited amount of data.

What can I do with the data I store?
You can upload data to the repository, make copies, move it around, download it, and delete it. Data can be organized into folders.

How is Object Storage different from Google Drive, Dropbox and others?
Google Drive, Dropbox and other similar storage solutions are great if you need to store small amounts of non-sensitive data. S3 Object Storage, on the other hand, can store the data of large organizations and offers access control and a high level of information protection. It is also easily scalable to meet your business needs.

Is my data protected?
All data is stored in secure data centers equipped with surveillance cameras, access control systems, security, etc.

Can I connect an Object Storage container as a network drive?
Yes, you can connect the container as a network drive using the FTP protocol or any other method.

Does Object Storage work with all applications?
No. The application must support the S3 REST API.

How is data backed up in Object Storage?
Copies of the data are hosted on geo-remote servers. If one of the servers fails, the data is not lost, but remains available through redundancy.

Why is 'no hierarchy' an advantage of object storage?
Building a hierarchy significantly increases the path to the data (object) and therefore the response time of the application. In object storage, data lies flat and can be transmitted almost immediately to the application or to the Internet via http/https.

How do I migrate from AWS S3, Azure and other storage to Cloud4U Cloud Object Storage?
You can migrate data using Rclone or similar software.

What is metadata?
Metadata is information about objects. This includes the name, file type, file size and creation date. Metadata is necessary for storage management. It makes it easier to search, sort and set access policies.

What kind of information can metadata include?
Anything! You can add any kind of information, from the various properties of an object to the rights associated with the object for each specific user.
